CERT training will take volunteers through 21 hours of instructional courses to become certified volunteers. Teams will learn important skills to keep safe and to help others during disasters. Topics include disaster preparedness, basic fire suppression, light search and rescue, medical operations, damage assessment, team organization and disaster psychology.
Any person interested in helping the community can become certified although teams are preferred from neighborhoods, businesses and faith-based groups. Following initial training, CERT members typically get together once a month for organizational meetings, review of equipment and techniques and planning for emergencies. Volunteers must be physically fit enough to perform this type of work and be available during or after significant emergencies and disasters.
