Subject: Approve extension of hours at wellness center

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends approval of request to extend hours at wellness center in FY 2014 budget.

Analysis:

During a prior budget workshop, Mr. Herrin provided a detailed report about the success of the wellness center and the substantial decrease in health care costs to the city. In fact, the wellness center is at virtually 100% utilization this causes increased costs to the city when patients are unable to obtain appointments in a timely fashion and use far more expensive outside services.

The Health Insurance Wellness Center budget increased approximately $100,000. This increased funding will add one Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) three (3) days per week, 8 hours per day. The increased professional staffing will double the available appointments slots from 72 per week to 144 per week. In addition, the $100,000 will fund an additional part time Medical Assistant needed to handle the increased patient volume, and fund the additional prescriptions and medical supplies also the result of the increased patient volume.

Options:

1. Approve additional hours and staffing at the wellness center; or,

2. Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

Fiscal Impact:

The FY 2014 budget will incorporate the additional cost of $100,000 which will be offset by significant savings in healthcare costs because of the additional staffing and hours.
